IE9 and Firefox 4 post top marks in Web browser power use comparison

Over on the Internet Explorer Blog, Microsoft has posted results from an extensive comparison of the top five Web browsers. The goal: to determine whether Internet Explorer 9, Firefox 4, Chrome 10, Safari 5, or Opera 11 is able to squeeze the most life out of your laptop's battery.

A baseline was determined with test systems sitting idle, and then browsers were pointed at about:blank, a news site, the HTML5 Galactic demo, and the IE9 fish tank demo. Perhaps unsurprisingly, IE9 came out on top -- though Firefox 4 was a very close second on nearly every test. As you can see, the other browsers didn't necessarily fare quite as well, with Google Chrome, Safari, and Opera all posting significantly worse scores. In Opera 11's case, a laptop battery would last over one hour more with Internet Explorer 9 installed.

But what we'd really like to know is where did Microsoft find the dilithium crystals required to run a Galactic Total Power Consumption test...

Mystery HTC Windows Phone sports 12 megapixel goodness, RAW support

Phone cameras still have a ways to go to catch up to the awesome capabilities of your standard DSLR, but the handset captured in the image above would certainly get them headed in the right direction. International phone review superstar Eldar Murtazin snapped a few shots of an as-of-yet unnamed HTC device running Windows Phone. It sports a look very similar to the HTC Trophy, although this particular gem is capable of capturing images at 12 megapixel resolution -- comparable to the Nokia N8. We can tell from Eldar's tweets and images, however, that it's gone one step further by adding support for pictures in RAW format. We're still waiting to get more information about this device, but for now we invite you to enjoy the images above and below.

One Year In, iPad Apps Get Less Wacky and More User-Friendly

One year after the iPad’s release, third-party apps have improved dramatically in usability, according to an interface scientist.
Jakob Nielsen, often hailed as “king of usability,” published results this week on a follow-up study examining iPad app interfaces. He found that iPad apps today are considerably “less wacky” and therefore easier to use than they [...]

Dell?s Thin, Aluminum 15z Is Curiously Familiar

This is Dell innovative new XPS 15z, apparently the “thinnest 15-inch PC on the planet.” Does it look at all familiar?

Dell curiously missing from Windows Phone 'Mango' hardware partner list, Microsoft says 'stay tuned' (updated)

Microsoft this morning added Acer, Fujitsu and ZTE to its stable of Windows Phone hardware partners, but look at that image above and you'll find one name missing. Yes, Michael Dell's surname is a notable absentee from the group of Mango manufacturers, which prompted us to reach out to someone in charge to see what's what. A Microsoft rep informed us that the company has nothing to announce on that front at present, but urged us to "stay tuned," whatever that may mean. If you're wondering where Nokia is, fret not, it's still very much in Microsoft's future plans, it just got a separate mention. As to Dell? Not a peep in the entire keynote. This comes only a day after a Wall Street Journal article mentioned Dell's intention to reduce its presence in the consumer market and focus on its enterprise strengths -- could an abandonment of Windows Phone be one of those steps?

Update: Dell is not off the list of WP7 hardware manufacturers. Microsoft told us that the Round Rock gang simply isn't one of the "partners ready to go" do the Mango tango right now.

OfficeMax now selling the Acer Iconia Tab A500

Acer Iconia Tab A500

Although it's been a long time coming, the Acer Iconia Tab A500 is now hitting some store shelves -- and one of those stores, as announced today is OfficeMax. Wasting no more time, OfficeMax has made the Android 3.0 Honeycomb powered tablet available today for $449.99.

"We are excited to offer Acer's new Iconia Tab A500 in all OfficeMax's retail locations and online," said Ryan Vero, EVP and Chief Merchandising Officer for OfficeMax. "Its light-weight, slim design and exceptional operating platform is designed for customers who prefer a smaller-sized tablet. The power, speed and versatility behind the Iconia Tab create an enjoyable user experience."

That power and speed he is referring to comes from the NVIDIA Tegra 2 mobile 1GHz dual-core processor. If you've not had a chance to see the Acer Iconia Tab A500 in action, check out our previous hands-on with it -- otherwise, jump on past the break for the full press release.
