One Month Later, Android Tablet Platform Has 50 Apps

Motorola’s Xoom tablet is the first promising alternative to Apple’s iPad, but the sickly condition of Android’s tablet app ecosystem may end up stalling the platform’s progress.
One month after its launch, the Xoom currently has about 50 native apps available for Android 3.0 Honeycomb, Google’s version of Android optimized for tablets.
That’s pitiful compared with the [...]

Field Notebook Records EXIF Metadata for Film Photographs

If you ignore power-plugs and adapters, then my posts here on Gadget Lab skew rather heavily to notebooks (the paper kind) and photography. So I am almost contractually obliged to write about this field notes notebook from Etsy maker fabriKate.
The book (which is not from the actual Field Notes company) is a way to record [...]

Demonstrators Protest Tax Exemptions Outside Of Twitter HQ

Protesters holding hash-tagged decorated signs like "Shame On Twitter" and "Respect Our Communities" gathered outside of Twitter headquarters this morning at 10am to protest what they see as an unfair tax cut and requests for other concessions made by Twitter to the city of San Francisco. The protests have since dissipated. The demonstrations were called by an organization called the South of Market Community Action Network (SOMCAN) that aims to represent poor and underserved communities. SOMCAN also asked protestors to tweet "SHAME on YOU!" for being "socially irresponsible" at Twitter in addition to picketing in real life. Even though about 50 people showed up in person, thus far no tweets have been sent.

MIT professor touts first 'practical' artificial leaf, signs deal with Tata to show up real plants

A professor at MIT claims to have Mother Nature beat at her own game. Dr. Daniel Nocera says his invention is ten times more efficient at photosynthesis than a real-life leaf, and could help to bring affordable alternative energy to developing countries. Described as an "advanced solar cell the size of a poker card," the device is made of silicon, electronics, and inexpensive catalysts made of nickel and cobalt. When placed in a gallon of water under direct sunlight, the catalysts break the H2O down into hydrogen and oxygen gases, which are then stored in a fuel cell -- the energy produced is apparently enough to power a single house for a day. Of course, this isn't the first time we've seen scientists try to one-up nature, in fact, we've seen solar-powered leaves before, but this thing actually looks poised for the mass market -- Nocera signed a deal with Tata in October. Full PR after the break.

Knock on Wood When You Say You'll Find an iPad 2 Before Christmas [Crap]

This is one for the superstitious Giz readers who flounder when lacking a dense bit of wood to knock on. Made from real wood, this three-pack of stickers cost $8 and can be stuck to pretty much anything. Your forehead, maybe? [SuckUK via OhGizmo] More »

Ask DLS: Cross-platform multiplayer games that work on Android and iOS

askdls
Here's one for our knowledgeable commenters: I recently bought my girlfriend an iPad. I, on the other hand, own an Android device. And now we're looking for games we can play using both devices.

There's no dearth of multiplayer games either for Android or for iOS. But finding multiplayer games that can cross the platform boundary is an entirely different matter.

Jay recently posted Words with Friends which is one such game. It's actually an ideal example, because it's turn-based so you don't necessarily both have to be next to your device at the same time (great for long-distance gaming).

But what other examples are there? What multiplayer games are there that let iOS users play with Android users?

[Why am I now humming 'Ebony and Ivory'? -Ed]

Charge Anywhere update turns Nexus S into full-on mobile payment terminal

Processing mobile payments via an external dongle? That's so early 2011. Charge Anywhere has a less troublesome idea, and if you're the lucky owner of a Google Nexus S, you could soon be accepting cold, hard virtual cash via NFC. For those already familiar with the space, you'll know that this very company already has applications out for the iPhone, BlackBerry and Android devices, but all of those obviously require a credit card swiping mechanism to be connected. According to CNET, the latest version will include support for the NFC module embedded within the Nexus S, enabling it to be a full-on mobile payment terminal with no additional hardware required. Both MasterCard PayPass and Visa Blink payments could be ingested, but don't go searching for the update in the Android Market; the company's done with the new build, but it won't be let loose to the public until it's ran past larger customers first. We don't get the impression that the NFC-compatible version will run any more than the $9.99 per month, but it's obviously a wait-and-see affair for now.

Shadow Era Card Game Gets New Cards and Offline Play [Blip]

Shadow Era, our previous app of the day and my favorite card game for iOS, just got a pretty big update. There are 23 cards—including armor and weapons—offline play, older device support, and some multiplayer changes. The downside is some people are seeing some bugs, so you might want to hold off until those are fixed. [iTunes] More »

Lockheed Martin shows off Orion spacecraft, new secret lair

Lockheed Martin shows off Opollo spacecraft, new underground lair
No, that's not the Apollo command module you're looking at up there. What's old is new again in space design, and what's floating weightless above this text is a photo of humanity's next great chariot into space. It's the Orion spacecraft from Lockheed Martin, commissioned for NASA and designed to carry a crew of four not just for trips into orbit but well out into the solar system. Lockheed Martin has just taken the wraps off the thing for the first time, also showing off its new Space Operations Simulation Center (SOSC), located neither in Houston nor Cape Canaveral. It is instead dug into built atop the bedrock in Colorado, theoretically isolating it from seismic and other disturbances so that the testing crew can do their thing without any outside interference. In that bunker the ship is currently testing ahead of a planned first launch in 2013, taking a crew into orbit as soon as 2016. Mars? That might be another few years.

Update: John wrote in to point out that the facility is actually built on some bedrock, not within the bedrock. So, it's not an underground lair after all -- but it's still a lair by golly.

Tiger Woods: My Swing App Only Improves Your Golf Swing [Apps]

Tiger is back on the prowl and on the golf course. And that guy knows a thing or twenty about both. His brand new app, Tiger Woods: My Swing helps your golf game by recording a video of your golf swing and analyzing where you're going wrong by identifying the key primary positions of your swing and lining it up to let you visualize it. Even better, it lets you compare swings against your previous swings, your friend's swings and even Tiger himself. If I played the old man's game, I'd definitely buy the app. It connects to Golfshot.com too. $10 [iTunes] More »
